Pre-Modified Jeep Warning
If you are considering purchasing a Jeep of any type that has been previously modified by anyone or any organization, continue reading.
Our plea:
By purchasing a pre-modified new or used jeep you miss the most important part of the modification process. That part being, the conversation with a professional involving all the explanations and warnings that come with all modifications prior to installation. Conversations like these are held by professionals in order for you to make an informed decision prior to purchase. Being unable to weigh the heeded caution or ask valid questions about the risks associated with any and all modifications leaves you STUCK with all problems that may occur, safety and mechanical alike. As modified vehicles never typically fall under most state and federal "Lemon Laws".
Our Reasoning:
- No quality control of the product
You are stuck with only a general idea of what you "think" you purchased - Dollar for dollar
A pre-built jeep is sold as a "whole package" and was built to someone else's specifications and budget - Safety
Most of what we have seen on a pre-built Jeeps has been a heavy emphasis on "looking cool" and none of the emphasis where it should be, on safety components such as suspension. - The builder of the Jeep I am looking at used a Kit
To date, we have not seen a single vendor supplying a "Kit" where ALL required components were supplied that would produce a modified Jeep that was geometrically correct and safe in all of the ways they should be. - Over built
All too often we see these behemoth over built Jeeps being sold as daily drivers all whilst having wheels and tires disproportionate to the height. Being over built and under designed leads to dramatically reduced speeds in which the Jeep can be safely operated and issues such as Death Wobble appearing immediately. Problems that will become yours. - Detrimental permanent modifications
Modifications to the vehicles frame, axles, or body panels can lead to very costly repairs that are a result off-road use only modifications being used in daily use. - Beware the "Off-road clause"
Most Jeeps pre-built will claim to have some type of warranty and or that the Manufacturer will or may still honor your factory Warranty even after permanent detrimental changes to Factory systems or components. In almost all cases, once certain components are modified any and all failures that result in these modifications or failures that could even possibly be attributed to modifications will have the warranty holder claiming "Off-road use" leaving you to foot the bill. - Moderation
Amateur operations tend to over build or accessorize a Jeep anyway they can. We've seen it all, from sub-par mounting hardware on light bars that loosened up on the highway, to cheap axle retention hardware that breaks while driving, or the now unusable rust covered winch that didn't last a year due to our lovely New England weather. Another sign of the novice builder is an excess of parts thrown onto a Jeep. From unnecessary control arms, to low quality "geometry altering brackets", to unwarranted transfer case drops. To date none of our team members have seen a Jeep built with "no exclusions". - On-road VS off-road considerations
A Jeep built for all intensive purposes as an off-road vehicle will not handle nearly as well on road as a Jeep designed for on-road use. Being located in New England, the way we see it is, the majority of your driving will consist of ON PAVEMENT useage. - Cost
Bespoke building of your Jeep not only allows you to control the cost of individual steps in the process, it also allows you to avoid the issues raised above. Above all else you gain piece of mind that you were involved in all aspects of the process and gain the customization perks you would lose should you buy a Jeep pre-built. - No factory training available for modifications to Jeep brand vehicles
No folks there are NO Factory training programs for modifying jeep vehicles in any way at any point. There may be factory brand lift kits, however there is no training protocol for its installation or support. Meaning all installations are completed most often by standard service technicians at your local dealer or worse, the amateur that works using a trial and error method, shifting risk associated with modifications solely on the consumer.
